Favourably situated with views onto George Square, this three-tier establishment attracts a thriving trade with an extensive, unpretentious menu that combines simple, fast-food efficiency with reasonably well-made cuisine. Some of the seating on the mezzanine level is cramped, almost humorously so, yet this only reinforces the impression of a lively, bustling restaurant, with the sweeping delivery of somebody's pizza never far from your eye-line. For a memorable starter, there's an unlikely meeting of Mediterranean and Clydeside traditions with deep-fried, battered olives served with a spicy tomato dip. For the more ravenous, several pile-'em-high platters are available for sharing, with a veritable bonanza that includes chicken wings, breaded mushrooms, breaded mozzarella and stuffed jalapeño peppers. For main courses, there is a choice of five different pastas, as well as a broad seafood, steak and burger selection, alongside pizza options of gratifying diversity. The house calzone, for one, bursts with a wide variety of vegetables and assorted spicy meats. Mussels are fresh and come with a choice of tomato or white wine sauces, while the veal escalope is ladled in a smooth wild mushroom cream.
