Montgomery's, which sits thinly between a pub and a GP's surgery, is easily missed, but once you're inside, you'll find the interior opens to an unexpected and calming sense of space. A world map hangs on the corniced ceiling and local artists exhibit bold canvases on the walls above pale wooden panelling. Dark wood tables and chairs offer contrast, and soft seating is available on tweedy lilac banquettes and armchairs. Owner Colin Montgomery runs a café he can take pride in and dedicated attention to customer comfort (and whim) assures returning custom. All the menu favourites are here, with little flairs of presentation. A plate of Belgian waffles with pear and toffee is a clever breakfast twist. Montgomery's tomato and basil soup avoids being too sweet. Rolls and sandwiches are hefty and fresh with crispy salad. The five-star Danish pastries – displayed on glass cake stands – qualify for an ambassador's reception. Finally, the range of coffees is impressive, from the famous Vietnamese (beautifully sweet with condensed milk) to various flavoured beans and a new Polish 'glace' coffee with ice-cream.
