Mosque Kitchen is a singular dining experience, satisfying a very diverse clientele from all walks of life, staff and students from the nearby university and Muslim families. It's located in the Southside under a corrugated iron canapé at the back of the city's mosque, and at lunch and dinner times the formica tables and plastic chairs are packed with hungry diners. Queue up to have your food served, canteen-style, from the shiny silver counter, or takeaway if you don't fancy eating alfresco. Enjoy mountains of tasty vegetable or meat (lamb or chicken) curry served with piles of rice and naan bread for bargain basement prices. The Saturday special is the barbecue with different meats on offer, chicken and corn on the cob being the specialties. On Sunday mornings you can enjoy a traditional breakfast, including fried bread, sweet semolina and chickpea dishes. Fresh barbecued sheeh kebabs, now available every day, are deliciously moreish. Unpretentious and with no frills – just good food on a shoestring budget.
- High point: Nice atmosphere and great value for money
- Low point: Sharing a dining table with pigeons
