This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
You could easily walk past Charcoals without realising it is there, but once inside it you won’t be disappointed. The staff are friendly and welcoming, while the restaurant itself is tastefully decorated with a cosy ambience. The menu doesn’t offer up many surprises, but the prices are reasonable and there’s no skimping on the portion sizes. The chicken puri starter is delicately crisped and puffed, topped with a generous amount of nicely spiced chicken. From the selection of traditional mains including balti, korma and karahi dishes, the chicken jaipuri has a satisfying kick of spicy peppers and onions, with just enough aromatic coconut to nicely balance it. For chilli-sceptics or those following Popeye’s dietary recommendations there is the milder but still tasty Punjabi favourite of chicken saag – with delicate spicing melding with the spinach to create a delicious sauce. Under new management as of January 2011, there are tweaks planned but Charcoals will not stray far from its winning formula of an unpretentious dining experience offering good value in the heart of the City Centre.
- High point: Great value in the City Centre
- Low point: Low-key exterior means it can be overlooked

If you are looking for fancy decor this is not the place for you. If you are looking for good food and excellent service then give this place a try. Recently under new management the staff are eager to ensure you enjoy your meal. I will be eating there again!

CharcoalsReport -
I visited Charcoals, Renfield Street, Glasgow with my daughter on 27th June '09.
After finding a very dead weavel in the joint 2-portion rice dish, we obviously complained - first to the waitress (who was lovely), then the "chef" - who was argumentative, and lastly with the "owner" who was belligirent, partonising and sleazy in the extreme!
While my daugher was physically retching, the "owner" offered us more food, which we naturally declined. I spent the most part of Saturday night/Sunday morning revisiting my king prawn dish - was quite unwell for almost a week afterwards.
I paid 50% of the bill just to get out of the premises and away from the "owner" - in hindsight, I wish I had stood my ground!
We visited this restaurant 3 years previously, so were very much looking forward to great food - sadly, it was such a negative experience on this occasion, we will never visit again!
