Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Until early in 2008 Acanthus was part flower shop, part café. But it is now under different ownership and the blooms have gone, allowing the new management to expand the café's once restricted seating area. Situated on a busy stretch of Argyle Street, Acanthus caters for a regular stream of office and shop staff looking for a straightforward but tasty bite to eat. Given that the term 'home-made' is so often and so heedlessly bandied about, it is nice to be able to report that Acanthus' soup really is made by the owner. And very nice it is too: lentil soup is a simple, tasty no-nonsense affair – a bit like something your granny might have made to warm you up on a cold day. There is a fairly extensive choice of sandwiches (not too many places offer peanut butter) and they are very fresh. Service is swift, making Acanthus a good spot for takeaway or a quick lunch on the fly. The espresso is good and there are daily deals on a coffee and cake combos.

  • High point: Very good soup
  • Low point: The décor is a bit bleak

What a lovely coffee shop! The food was delicious and fresh - and served with a smile. The shop has a lovely atmosphere and I will certainly be back.
