An Lochan
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

An Lochan, some way along the Crow Road, is a great restaurant with a true Scottish feeling to it – fantastic yet humble. Small but pleasant touches such as creels covered in fairylights and traditional swing-top water bottles complement the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere. Recently taken over by the team behind Blas, the menu has changed to balance out fish and shellfish with some meat. Starters include such dishes as Stornoway black pudding served with a warm poached egg and red onion marmalade, or fresh Shetland mussels, complemented by a rich and delicious cream sauce. For mains, "Orkney Gold" sirloin steak is again fresh and tender, whilst roast medallions of monkfish are served with two enormously fat tiger prawns, creamy leeks and a fragrant green peppercorn sauce. Desserts – such as a silky white-chocolate panna cotta balanced with rich, velvety dark-chocolate sauce – are simply wonderful. With just enough white linen to make it feel special, yet with gentle and genuine serving staff, diners at An Lochan could never feel anything but at home.

  • High point: The best of Scotland's larder, beautifully cooked
  • Low point: Off the beaten track

Have to admit a bit of a favourite of mine probably for all the wrong reasons but since I discovered it I have made it my regular on my irregular visits to the big smoke. Super food, brilliantly prepared. Would not consider it child friendly but there are times I do not find this a problem.Decor simple but effective. Service friendly but efficient.Sometimes not all menu items are available but this is intimated long before choices are made.
Regarding the identifying of their suppliers by their first names, this is by no means an affectation.I also know Mary and Winston not forgetting Shona and Arthur.Nae kiddin'.
