Located near Queen's Park, yet slightly off the Southside beaten track, India Gate is much more welcoming than first impressions would have you think. Beyond the neon sign outside and the descent down a small flight of stairs, this brightly-lit restaurant with basic décor has a warm and comfortable feel, mainly due to the genuinely friendly service. Starters include all the classics, such as pakoras, samosas and dosas, but there are adventurous twists such as the haggis pakora - a delicious fusion of East meets West, with a thin and extremely crisp batter coating the spicy filling. Main courses also feature curry-house staples, such as kormas, patias and bhunas, but the king prawn masaledar is a definite stand-out. Massive, meaty prawns are served with lashings of a tangy, piquant sauce, which has the added bite of chopped peppers and strong flavours of mango chutney and coriander. The soft, warm naan bread is an excellent accompaniment and arrives on a huge platter sprinkled with subtle tandoori spices. The afternoon buffet (£5.50) and two-course pre-theatre menu (£7.95) make for even more affordable alternatives to the reasonably-priced à la carte.
