The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.
On the fringes of the Merchant City near the law courts, Café Lava is a stylish alternative to the greasy spoons of Gallowgate: good for meeting friends, perusing the papers and snacking on a sandwich made with bread baked on the premises. With just a smattering of tables, it's bright and friendly, with original paintings on sale. Lava's take on eggs Benedict stacks tattie scones with bacon and a firmly poached egg, as well as a rather light dosing of Hollandaise sauce. There's also a Stornoway black pudding version. Cakes are baked in-house, and include a good treacle toffee tart, which is sweet and sticky but fresh enough to sidestep stodginess. There's free wi-fi, so Lava is also fine place to sit down with your laptop and work your way through the day.
- High point: Scrambled eggs
- Low point: New Order on a loop
