Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Despite the name, this Southside venture from the G1 Group is actually a rather stylish wine bar housed in a handsome sandstone building just off the main thoroughfares of central Shawlands. Round tables are lined up in front of the large bar, while a few booths have been designed for larger groups. Polished tree-stump stools are a quirky addition to the set-up. Wine bottles poke their necks out from a wooden rack that dominates the back wall, and the list of 20 or so reds and whites appears on a blackboard behind the bar. The selection is predominantly French and does not shy from putting several £20-plus numbers in there for any local high rollers. The concise food menu consists of variations of reasonably well-executed pastas, sandwiches, salads and fajitas. The latter features a sizzling platter of caramelised vegetables with the choice of prawns or chicken, accompanied by thick wedges of tangy lime. Among the starters, the garlic mayonnaise dip served with the garlic cream cheese-stuffed mushrooms might be seen as a bit of gastric overkill. But the creamy wild mushroom spaghetti is reassuringly rich - and plentiful. Sunday brunch is fairly popular, with options from toast and jam to 'create your own' omelettes.
