Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

When he is not nipping out for a cigarette or chatting with the clientele, owner Tony Sinclair is gently directing his small staff at this cosy modern café sandwiched among the galleries on Parnie Street. These premises have served as a small licensed diner, trading under various titles, for some time now. Sinclair admits that he perhaps tried to accomplish too much when he took it over in 2006. As it stands, he feels ready to start introducing some live acoustic music nights and perhaps low-key literary events in 2007. This place's coffee, known for its strength, is fair trade Italian Aroma (coincidentally, a former moniker). The current name is inspired by the Trans-European railway, and the sandwich selection is named after various continental cities, from the 'Berlin' (a BLT) to 'Zurich' (goat's cheese and picante sauce) via 'Madrid' - a tangy combination of thinly-sliced chorizo with mozzarella and pesto, which melds rather nicely on a ciabatta roll. A few nights a week, the bistro menu comes out, with starters such as chicken liver pâté and main courses such as a salmon, king prawn and scallop casserole.
