The walls of Trans Europe cafe are adorned with a detailed railway map of mainland Europe, a motif which runs throughout the café’s décor and gives it a charmingly old-fashioned feel. The sandwich selection reflects this vibe further, with each offering boasting a European city of inspiration. The Lisbon sandwich is crammed with an assortment of high-quality roasted Mediterranean vegetables, lined with pesto and completed with a generous helping of mozzarella. All sandwiches are available on a wide selection of breads and accompanied by hand-cooked crisps and a dark-green side salad. A daily soup and sandwich deal allows customers to combine any sandwich and soup for just over a fiver. The soup selection changes frequently, with staff keen to experiment with old favourites and new flavours. The carrot and ginger soup comes highly recommended, proving a refreshing and hearty combination of tastes and textures. The atmosphere of the cafe is talkative and welcoming, as customers relax into the authentic train-bench seating and delve into the selection of board games which find themselves in improbable demand. Whilst Trans Europe can’t promise a sunny European destination at the end of your meal, it certainly does deliver the most pleasant of journeys.
- High point: Quaint, unique decor
- Low point: Toilet is crammed and disorganised.
