Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

It would be very easy to walk past this understated restaurant hidden among some of the more dubious haunts of Bread Street, but that would be a mistake. Owner Celena Collins gives a personal welcome at the door, in a nod to the overall experience of ambience and food to come. The mismatched, down-to-earth interior adds to the charming welcome and is perfect for a quick meal, a romantic encounter or a large party. The homeliness of the dining room translates to the menu, which offers a range of truly authentic Italian cooking. Chef Pabloe has a no-nonsense approach to cooking. Traditional bruschetta with a hint of chilli followed by Tuscan sausages served on a bed of garlic mash accompanied by the freshest of wilted spinach makes for a sumptuous, unfussy feast. The pasta dishes are all equally tempting and, with fresh specials drawn up daily, the menu is kept diverse. The desserts are less tempting than the mains, but the luxurious taste of the tiramisu is memorable. Once you have discovered this hidden gem, you can be assured you will return again and again for a relaxed evening of unpretentious, appetising food.

  • High point: Warm welcome and homely atmosphere
  • Low point: Quite cramped
