Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

With a grand selection of daily specials, an impressive collection of home-made cakes, tarts and pastries, Au Gourmand breads and efficient service, Canonmills' very own café deserves its loyal local fan club. Once home to the Au Gourmand bakery, this is a real breakfast-time find, be it the full or semi-circle breakfast, eggs Benedict or vegge variation that you crave. Excellent Campbell's meats and dairy feature, and no frozen or pre-prepared products come near the kitchen. Wooden shelving displays the house wines, a sculpture adorns the wall and the space, though slender, (only one of the tables is big enough for a lunch party) has great natural light from windows at each end. The daily menu's tempting choices may include a warm wrap of roasted duck, shredded chilli and spring onion with plum sauce, or seared Scottish fillet beef and rocket salad with fresh parmesan, pesto dressing and shallots, and macaroni for the kids. Special dietary requirements are provided for, and should you wish to have circle cater for an occasion, the owner Barry Bryson will be happy to oblige.

  • High point: Freshly prepared scrumptious food that's worth every penny
  • Low point: The popular specials tend to sell out
