Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Circle Café often has them queuing in the doorway – just the look of the place is so inviting. The front counter is full of beautiful cakes and pastries; fresh breads are stacked in wicker baskets, and high wooden shelves and slate floors add class. The menu goes beyond soups, salads and sandwiches with pastas, pies and stews such as smoked haddock, leek and potato. King prawn linguini is good with well-timed pasta and a fresh, nutty pesto. The house burger has a roughly ground, homey feel though chunky chips might suit it better than skinny fries. Chalked up are a daily frittata and soup, two changing specials and an all-day eggs Benedict to lure punters from the Botanic Gardens on weekends. Cakes, in particular, can be top notch. The chilli chocolate cheesecake is a thing of wonder. Only one mystifying snag: although popular with families this place only has one high chair. Mums, be prepared to negotiate.

  • High point: Menu to suit many moods, from bistro dishes to quick sarnies
  • Low point: Draughty tables by the door

5. Circle regular, Canonmills, Edinburgh – 8 October 2010, 10:36am5 starsCircle CaféReport

Every so often I stumble across a place that perfectly defines the location in which it is based, a place that is whole-heartedly embraced by the surrounding community - Circle is a prime example.

In my opinion, Circle offers a relaxed but refined experience - whether it be a coffee and pastry or something more substantial. The food is exceptionally consistent and is constantly changing to accommodate seasonable produce, whilst satisfying the most discerning of foodies - I'm exceptionally picky!

I have only been a regular at Circle for a matter of months, but it has already won me over with it's friendly, yet professional service, superior food and it's ability to have morphed into an establishment that suits people from all walks of life. It's a refreshing remedy to what, in my opinion is becoming a far too pretentious city.

What a lovely place. My wife has been there with my mother before and told me about the place. We came back with our little baby and we will definitely become frequent clients.
Great coffee, amazing environment and outstanding food!
(*I hear some bad words coming from the kitchen, they could be just a little bit more careful with that)
