Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is taken from the 2007 edition.

Despite the deployment of a clutch of mirrors, there is no hiding the fact that Sing Thai is one of the smallest restaurants in Edinburgh. This makes it quite cosy for couples dining by candle-light, with the best tables being the duo by the door blessed with sort of vaulting windows that the New Town is famous for. The menu is large and there is certainly nothing bijou about the generous, well-balanced red curry main, which leaves the mouth pleasantly tingling. While the seafood starter platter is similarly substantial, it is not always the freshest and comes with only one measly dipping sauce. Steer clear too of the overdone sirloin steaks. Also disappointing are the dessert options, which are of the plastic menu pre-prepared variety and not even remotely Thai. Wine choices are better, with a bottle of Moët & Chandon for amorous couples priced at a reasonable £35. On a good night Sing Thai offers up decent Thai cooking in a relaxed New Town setting, but this is not a place to come if you are looking for top quality or culinary experimentation.
