Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Sing Thai is a neighbourhood restaurant in the true sense of the phrase. The interior looks as though the owner has just decided to open up his home to cater to some friends, and regulars popping in for a takeaway are greeted like long lost pals. If that gives the impression that this is a slipshod operation, it’s actually anything but. The chef may be working in a kitchen that’s not much bigger than he is, but the quality of the dishes is undeniable. An opening gambit of cod fishcakes is exemplary – the sharp shock of citrus zest bringing a freshness to what is something of a staple dish. The beef red curry is aromatic and rich with a hearty, meaty undercurrent, and forms a natural counterpoint to the markedly lighter, more fragrant, green chicken curry. By comparison to this, the desserts are something of a disappointment, being of the straight-from-the-freezer variety, but given the generosity of the previous two courses, you may find this to be a blessing in disguise.

  • High point: Friendly, homely and unpretentious dining
  • Low point: Homely is all well and good, but could do with a fresh lick of paint

Reviews of Sing Thai (42 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh)

5. Andy M, Edinburgh – 24 November 2011, 7:35pmSing ThaiReport

My fiancee and I have made the intimate and atmospheric Sing Thai one of our regular haunts over the past couple of years, and have introduced it to a number of friends who have been similarly impressed by the place. The restaurant is a real treat, offering a mix of quality service and delicious food that is unbeaten (but often matched) in Edinburgh. The prices are very reasonable, the menu is vast, and the ingredients are fresh - this is a must for any lover of Thai cuisine.

The food is good, the service is attentive, and as the main review states, it's a little shabby, but another let-down is they don't do BYOB at the weekends, only Tues-Thurs.

We experienced slow service and mediocre food, the decor is also little shabby. When we visited, on a Saturday night, people kept coming to the restaurant to collect take-aways. In my opinion, there are many better Thai restaurants in Edinburgh.
