Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

The second Two Fat Ladies restaurant may be that rare thing - a sequel that's better than the original. The first, at 88 Dumbarton Road, remains a good place to eat, but the new city centre enterprise (open for two years against the West End unit's 17) could just have the edge. The regularly-changing menus at the two branches are very similar (though rarely exactly the same), prices are almost identical, cooking is equally skilled, and raw materials, including excellent west coast shellfish, come from the same sources. At Blythswood Street, however, there's plenty of space and light, with big windows and whitewashed walls and ceilings. There's also something of a big-city buzz about the place, thanks to people from nearby places of work and entertainment packing the place out. As for the food, scallops, prawns and mussels are available as starters and mains, fish dishes such as fillet of halibut on a bed of risotto, or a simply-prepared whole lemon sole are excellent. There's also a decent choice for anyone who doesn't fancy fish, including interesting beef dishes. Two Fats is strong on afters, and diners have been observed moving straight from the first course to share the 'grand dessert' selection of five indulgent puddings. The house wine is more than acceptable and the choice of ports, malts and brandies is reasonably priced. Service is helpful and extremely efficient - it needs to be given the popularity of the place.
