The name of this Haymarket restaurant implies something different than its simple, smartly decorated interior. Perhaps it refers to the food from a menu offering the north Indian and Bengali dishes now so familiar to us in the UK. Here they're certainly not run-of-the-mill, with fresh local ingredients and a contemporary twist. Starters include a row of baby aubergine pakora, the batter without any greasiness and yielding silky, smoky fruit. Sheek kebabs of tender minced lamb are served with fresh mint and yoghurt sauce. Of the curries, Punjab methi gust is fragrant and not too heavy, with pieces of lamb in a sauce of herbs such as fresh fenugreek and coriander. A highlight on the tandoori menu is trout, marinated in yoghurt and spices and served whole after being barbecued. The menu of main courses advertises a recommended side dish for each, although it would be a shame to pass up the bhindi bhajee, spiced pieces of okra simmered in a rich tomato sauce. This goes well with their lemon rice, studded with cashews. The dessert menu is brief, but includes refreshing lemon and coconut ice creams, served inside their respective fruits.
- High point: Unusual tandoori specialities
- Low point: Slightly subdued atmosphere
A bit of Indian magic for lunch!
How many restaurants in Edinburgh could you choose from for lunch - any day of the week? Probably more than you can imagine. So, how do you decide on one that will be right for you? Well, if you are a fan of Bengali and Indian food … like the idea of richly-coloured surroundings that are warm and relaxing … consider a West End location practical and desirable … and will always respond to a special lunchtime offer … then your decision is made for you. It has to be Ignite.
Two courses for £8.50.
At Ignite in Morrison Street (Haymarket station is right on the doorstep), the great-value lunchtime menu is peppered with many eastern favourites. For starters you can have Vegetable Pakura or Somosa, Chicken or Sheek Kebab.
Main courses cover the classic dishers of Kurma, Bhuna, Madras or Ceylon - made with Chicken, Lamb or Vegetables - and also the option of Chicken or Lamb Tikka Massalam. All served with Pilao Rice or Plain Nan . Alternatively, you might choose a Chicken or Mushroom Omelette with French Fries. (You are not compelled to order Indian dishes.)

Tea or coffee? Yes, either is included in the special two-course price and can be used to toast your good sense of value and taste. All that remains is to tell you that there are many other indulgences on the menu if you wish to go beyond the £8.50 limit and that we recommend you reserve your table in advance. Had a great meal here, flavours were fresh and very 'clean' and unlike many mainstream Indian establishments the vegetarian options were well prepared and didn't suffer from the "everything cooked in the same sauce" approach. Would definitely recommend it although could have done without the businessmen bores (boars?) at the next table who insisted in belching loudly as we ate.

Very Poor. I was expecting great things with this being on the hit list and described as "a cut above"so what with 'Roti' being shut, we decided to go here for my partners 40th. We ended up being very disappointed. The curry's have a synthetic lack-luser feel to them and to be honest have had much better take aways from many smaller less pretentious establishments. There wasn't much in the way of fresh spices that we could taste and the sauces were a bit gloopy. The battered mushrooms were a real let down and have had better from Brewers Fayre. Its definitely not a cut above in fact its the least good curry we have had for a long time... and its overpriced.

Fantastic food and great decor. I've been three or four times and the food has been simply outstanding every time. Fresh ingredients and wonderful flavours. I'd agree with the reviewer that there maybe is too much to choose from on the menu but if you like your options then this is the place for you.

Love this restaurant. Some of the best Indian food I've had in Scotland. Highly recommended. Lovely surroundings as well although the mens bathroom's a bit small!

We have eaten here a few times and the food is excellent. The flavours and quality make it one of the best restaurants around. However, each time we have been, getting a glass or two of tap water has been like getting blood from a stone. They are happy to serve wine, beer anything with a price tag, but a glass of water is beyond them.
