Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Ignite's West End location and surfeit of business diners might explain why its prices sit nearer the top end of the scale for Indian restaurants. But this place offers professional service and hearty food in slick, modern surroundings. The main problem here is actually deciding what you want, with around 50 main courses on offer, not including sides or starters (the simple lamb kebab and tandoori lamb chops come recommended). The comprehensive dish descriptions are extremely helpful, telling us, for example, where a Nepalese influence creeps in, with the bhojpuri chicken – with tomato, garlic, spring onion and yoghurt – and simikot lamb also hailing from that part of the world. Other more familiar dishes are present and correct, such as chicken jhalfrezie, lamb pasanda and a north Indian chilli-garlic chicken that is rich in spice and tomato flavour, if a bit heavy on the oil. Amid a well-prepared selection, this pervasive oily richness would be the only cause for complaint, but for those simply seeking a south Asian feast, however, it will probably be an advantage.

  • High point: Because of the location, it never feels quiet
  • Low point: If you can't tolerate almost-decadent richness, don't complain

We have eaten here a few times and the food is excellent. The flavours and quality make it one of the best restaurants around. However, each time we have been, getting a glass or two of tap water has been like getting blood from a stone. They are happy to serve wine, beer anything with a price tag, but a glass of water is beyond them.
