Shawlands is becoming a thriving hub of bars and gastro-pubs, with new ventures popping up out of nowhere on a seemingly weekly basis. While some vanish as quickly as they appear, JAM on Kilmarnock Road has hit on a winning formula that has kept pre-clubbers pouring in through its doors since 2004. A sprawling space of muted tones and scattered with cafeteria tables and 1970s-style chairs, it doesn't immediately seem like the kind of venue that would pull in the image-conscious punter week on week. Its mass appeal may have something to do with the drinks promotions, DJ sessions and meal deals that feature on a regular basis. There are two-for-one offers on many popular mains, such as fish and chips, burgers, chilli, and a mammoth plate of bubbling macaroni cheese laced with strips of thick-cut bacon that lend a delicious smokiness. Vegetarian diners have a rather limited choice in comparison with other pub menus, but the bean burger has a spicy kick and a firm, meaty texture of a higher calibre than many of its competitors' offerings. Service here is friendly and swift – a credit to a bar with no shortage of patrons to cater to.
- High point: Attentive, cheerful staff
- Low point: Can get quite cold
