The Brasserie, which is entered from Great Western Road, is the dedicated restaurant of Òran Mór, Colin Beattie's multi-purpose entertainment complex situated in a former church at the top of Byres Road. The decor is a mix of plush ecclesiastical gothic and a kind of Gallic bistro flare, with lush velvet curtains and church candles alongside art deco-style wrought ironwork and tables set into comfy, private booths. A small bar offers a pleasant place for aperitifs or a cocktail. With very friendly staff, the place serves Scottish produce prepared using contemporary French twists. Dishes include chunky, almost sweet-tasting ham hock terrine, served with tart piccalilli vegetables as a starter. Main courses feature exquisitely seared fillet steak with a pink centre, served with creamy peppercorn sauce and fondant potatoes. Flaky roasted monkfish, served with curried mussels and vegetables, makes a colourful and mildly spicy option. Desserts can seem a bit disappointing (such as an over-chilled chocolate cheesecake), but the coffee can end a meal well.
