Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Sygn’s geometric print wallpaper, grey fabrics and beech tables create a retro-chic vibe that’s simple yet elegant, proving to George Street’s style bars that you don’t need to be ostentatious to be cool. And if you can resist the temptation to go home and redecorate, then the cocktails are certainly worth hanging around for. Long-forgotten recipes (Pink Lady) are resurrected, old favourites are re-enlivened (Kichee Caipirinha) and classics (Mai Tai) are revered. The food’s not bad either – served up in and on an array of wooden boards, mini pails and Kilner jars. There’s an emphasis on snacking and sharing, although larger dishes are available if you’re after something more substantial. Sea bass is fresh, firm and fleshy, although the accompanying tomato, chilli and caper dressing lacks a little punch. Sygn also make a decent fist of the gourmet burger, the pork and chorizo version being a particular highlight.

  • High point: An imaginative cocktail list you’ll want to drink your way through
  • Low point: Fancy plates and platters aren’t always practical to eat off

I’ve heard about Sygn from friends for a while now but had never been, after leaving one bar on George Street because the service was shocking, the girl was too busy texting and the other because the staff left us standing by the door for 15 mins we decided to head to Sygn. I was very impressed from the moment I walked in the door, the staff were very welcoming and efficient – we were seated and with drink in minutes! The menu had a fantastic selection, something that would suit all! There was so much to choose from that we asked the waitress for her opinion. I ordered the Chorizo and Pork burger which was fantastic, I would definitely recommend this! Think Sygn is perfect value for money, 2 mains & 7 drinks and our tab came to £40. I will definitely be visiting again and singing its praises to all

Interesting concept -style bar. I have a thumping headache and sore throat after a Friday evening in this bar/restaurant. Not from wine drunk, but the relentless 'music' and trying to converse with my friends over the top of it. The manager said it could not be turned off, it was part of the 'atmosphere' but all that could be heard was the intrusive bass, there was no way anyone could hear or recognise the music. I know Friday night is a busy noisy night but doesn't lots of people enjoying themselves constitute atmosphere? The food was OK, but tempura prawns with no lemon, chilli sauce or even salt were lacking in any spark and lamb curry had a stale cold flatbread with it and no chutney or other accompaniments although some was brought late when I had nearly finished. The waitress was charming and helpful, she gets 5 stars.

Dinner for three, a few days ago.

The place is very well decorated in a nice minimalistic way, somehow different from Edinburgh's standards, and definitely clean.

We had two starters: crudités which were a total nonsense, and a 8£ hot Camambert which is basically sold for 1.98£ at Tesco...

Mains: steak and chicken burgers. Very good portions and well cooked.

Dessert selection and sweet wines are good. Avoid the cheese platter, which is just 3 tiny pieces of irrelevant chese. Good selection of wines and drinks at reasonable prices.

Staff was very friendly. After all, I'd go there again, this time for lunch.

lunch on a Friday for two - awesome. My starter of a flatbread pizza was lovely, his was prawn skewer - to die for. His steak sandwich for mains was great, my salmon on a bed of feta potato salad was one of the best meals I'd had in ages. Only gripe, portion of chips for his sandwich was pricey and they don't give you sauces - you get a dolop of mayo or red sauce on the side of your plate! Very strange. Will be going back though, really enjoyed the whole experience.

I had a lovely time at Sygn last night. The atmosphere and decor made for a relaxing place to spend a couple of hours after work. The cocktail list is refreshingly different to the usual list of old-timers you see in other places and they were made with care and precision by the bar staff. I thought the food was excellent value for money as all the main courses were 2 for 1. With each main averaging around £15, that meant my friend and I only paid £7.50 each for some very tasty dishes. The scallop and cauliflower puree starter was great - scallops perfectly cooked and sweet. My main of seabass was very tasty but my friend's seafood linguini blew it out the water. Sooooo good. Given previous reviews, this place must have picked up the pace a little - we had a bottle of nice wine, two cocktails, two starters and two mains for £60 and it definately outshone its counterparts on George Street for quality.

Can't quite make my mind up about Sygn. Great place for a drink and to hang out in chic surroundings. Restaurant bit didn't quite hit the mark though. Portions were generous (despite expecting small ones from previous review) but my spare ribs were too salty. Main fine but dessert too baked cheese in my cheescake. Too expensive.

This place certainly has a cutting edge feel to it, and superb efficient and friendly staff. Be warned however that food portions are small and prices high, so don't be fooled by the bar setting. Nevertheless, it was tasty (particularly the blueberry and white chocolate samosa's for dessert, a totally unique and refreshing experience). I'm not sure I'd go back as the prices are a bit steep for the setting, but it was an enjoyable experience.
