The Stockbridge Restaurant is a neat microcosm for the quirky bohemian chic and salubrious prosperity that characterises the New Town. Much care and thought has been shown to every aspect of the cosy basement restaurant’s operation, from the compelling menus and wine list to the striking décor, which sets large, eye-catching prints by Scottish Colourists such as Peploe and Cadell against slate-black walls, with gold drapes over the doors, high-backed brocade chairs and fresh flowers on the tables. Tuck into some home-made walnut bread as you consider chef Jason Gallagher’s selection of food created using the best local, seasonal ingredients. A starter of seared scallops is a particular highlight, served with a spring onion blini, crushed vine tomatoes, smoked bacon and sage, while the smoked haddock risotto is beautifully complemented by sweet roasted butternut squash and parmesan flakes. When it comes to the mains there’s so much happening on your plate that it’s difficult to know where to put your fork first. The pan-fried Gressingham duck arrives attractively pink with a lovely earthy, sweet beetroot tart and crunchy savoy cabbage, while the meaty wild halibut comes accompanied by gritty crab sausage, offset by the strong, aniseed flavour of horse mushrooms, each loaded forkful soaked up by creamed leeks. Desserts such as apple and nut crumble with cinnamon ice-cream are similarly comforting and attractively presented, while the meal is nicely topped off with coffee and a selection of hand-made madeleines of which Proust himself would have been proud.

  • High point: Beautifully cooked duck
  • Low point: Slightly mushy potato rosti

This fantastic little intimate restaurant is the perfect place if you want to impress a lady or if you just want a superb meal in a relaxed enjoyable atmosphere. The service is excellent and very prompt and the staff look after you in a very professional manner. The appetisers are all home made and very tasty. The meals are absolutely beautiful and cooked to perfection. The prices are superb for the high standard of food you get. The wine list is also superb and again the prices surprised me especially for the location and the type of wines on the list. I wish I discovered this little gem of a place ages ago. I will be a frequent visitor, don't just take my word for it, give it a try as you will NOT be disappointed.

We go to this restaurant about 4 times a year and is our favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. We always go on a Sunday because it's £22 for 3 courses and it's bring your own bottle. This would be good in an average restaurant but having eaten at Michelin starred restaurants I can confirm this is definitely up there with them.

The food is artistically presented but it's the combination of flavours that really stand out. I often eat the scallops because they are always so delicately cooked that they melt in your mouth. And the puddings are out of this world.

You will not be disappointed by this restaurant!!!
