There’s a cheery vibe in The Compass in the evenings, as drinkers and diners sit at small square tables among flickering candles and high stone walls. Aside from staples such as the veggie haggis burger, minute-steak sandwich and the Cajun chicken sandwich, the menu changes daily. A basket of soft bread with oil and balsamic vinegar starts things off and, to follow, steamed Scottish mussels in a white wine and garlic broth are plump and satisfying. Slim discs of creamy goat's cheese topped with a shelled pistachio nut are arranged prettily around a mixed leaf salad. A slippery baked tomato stuffed with sliced mushrooms and cheese has a fresh, peppery taste. The French beef sausages, robust and fat, are paired well with spicy gravy and velvety mashed potatoes. The wine list is sophisticated and well thought out, and contains a welcome selection of Spanish wines. The range of home-made desserts changes each day, and a chocolate brownie cake with a smooth filling and a crispy underside is an appealing choice. For those who prefer a savoury option, there is a Scottish cheese board paired with plum chutney. Attentive service watches over both drinkers and diners, and the overall charming ambience makes visitors feel that they have stumbled into the right place.
- High point: Particularly lovely desserts
- Low point: Fight for table space

The above review was maybe done quite a while ago, or maybe we just came on an off night....?
Had 'sun blazed roasted tomatoes with goats cheese bruschetta and rocket salad' £5.95. Result - 3 small pieces of French bread, wee tiny bit of goats cheese on top with 3 cherry toms and small portion of salad pretty tasteless and I am a lover of goats cheese and veggie food! Something I would call a dull starter and a total rip off. My partner had a haggis burger which he said was "mush". Lovely spot but won't be going again unfortunately.
