Nestled just four miles north of Lauder, Carfraemill’s reputation precedes it. Run by Jim and Jo Sutherland – a farmer and former home economics teacher – this award-winning restaurant and hotel prides itself on showcasing only the finest Scottish produce on its menus. Their butcher can be seen at the local market in St Boswell’s every week, while their fish comes fresh from Eyemouth. Farmhouse cheese and vegetables arrive from a slew of local suppliers, while lamb from their own farm, completes the picture. Never one to hide their love of Scottish produce under a bushel, Jim became infamous in the late 1990s for his backing of ‘Beef on the Bone’ following the BSE crisis, publically flouting the ban and calling for people to make their own choice. Says Jo of their enterprise: ‘We always set out to offer a menu that uses entirely Scottish produce. We’re very proud of that. Our lamb is first class, and I think there’s a great momentum right now for Borders produce: it’s nice to be part of that.’
