This heavenly restaurant and deli is spread across a warren of small basement rooms in a former bakery on Hanover Street. The surroundings combine old with new, partnering original features such as the solid fuel bakery ovens and polished flagstone floors with minimalist chalk-white walls and simple pine furniture. The core philosophy here is the use of organic, free-range, fairly-traded and locally-sourced produce to create an informal menu of all-day breakfast/brunch, tapas and more substantial lunch/dinner options. Tapas work well either as a small starter or for sharing among a group and include succulent roast pork belly with a crunchy fennel seed crust served on a bed of fruity home-made chutney, and a quirky veggie haggis pakora served with a subtle and creamy cucumber raita. Main meal dishes are creative, fresh and wholesome. They include fresh tagliatelle with tender lengths of char-grilled courgette, broccoli and pumpkin seeds, topped with fresh parmesan shavings, and a fluffy potato cake stuffed with rich, earthy lentils and roasted pinenuts served with a fragrant drizzle of home-made pesto. Try and squeeze in a pud, as delicious creations, such as the vibrant rhubarb crumble with home-made apple bramble ice-cream, combine indulgence with fresh, fruity flavours.
