If you have never been before, Hewat’s is quite a surprise. Located in unprepossessing and busy Causewayside, but only five minutes from the Queen’s Hall, this restaurant is a breath of fresh air. A bright and airy main dining room showcases the talented Edinburgh painter Caroline McNairn. The atmosphere is that of a joyful, sophisticated brasserie, run with personal attention from Margaret Hewat at front of house and her husband Richard, former head chef at Fishers and the RBS global HQ. Carefully devised menus are varied and creative but ‘recession beating’ as well: special offers include their now established ‘dine 4 about a tenner’ evening menu, as well as a more elaborate à la carte selection. Both the black pudding on wild mushroom and the haggis risotto put a spin on classic expectations, while roast tenderloin of wild boar with morel mushroom sauce is moreish. Afterwards, treat yourself to the selection of miniature desserts.
- High point: Full marks for inventive meals with canny pricing
- Low point: A little out of the way

First time visit last night. Incredible value on the Dine 4 about a Tenner menu. The Seabass and Salmon with the Risotto was excellent. Truly superb meal despite being very busy with families celebrating university graduation. Will definitely be back!

A family dinner for nine for my daughter's 18th birthday was a marvellous occasion. The staff were very friendly, patient and efficient, handling a latecomer and a birthday cake without batting an eyelid. The menu was interesting, as was the wine list. The food was excellent, both in taste and presentation. I commend the black pudding with haggis risotto as a starter to die for. Hewat's is slightly out of the way so I suspect it doesn't get the passing trade it deserves. For a nice dinner rather than a quick meal it is really good value. And it gets points for not fussing around asking if everything is all right every ten minutes!

Hewat's has never let us down. They have regularly delivered high quality food at reasonable prices, both Margaret front of house & Richard in the kitchen and there all staff have been warm and friendly.
They are running a 3 course deal for £10 which is a great intoduction to anyone wanting to try out this restaurant.
Surprised at some of the previous posts and there comments.
The experience has consitantly been a pleasure and we look forward to returning to smple the sea food and desserts.

I have been to this restaurant many times. I am very surprised by the other comments as I have never found the front of house staff to be anything other than great.
The food is always great and their latest midweek early evening offer - £10 for 2 courses is fantastic. Definitely worth a visit.

my second visit to hewats on 26th Aug was spoiled by the manner of one particular waitress. My friend and I took advantage of the excellent 2 courses for a tenner menu. However, when arriving we were asked if this was the menu we wished but not offered any alternative, first mistake, we were served quickly, in fact I had just swallowed my last mouthful and put down cutlery when the plate was whisked away! we booked for 6 and by 6.45 had been served 2 courses. The waitress asked any dessert, we said we would like 5 mins, a reasonable request, she said well if you do want dessert I need to take the order now as we need the table back for 8 !! Needless to say we were astounded, we didnt even order coffee as felt so let down. Excellent food in nice surroundings totally spoiled by one waitress. Richard take heed

I nearly went as the guest of a supplier but when we turned up for a lunchtime booking the woman in charge was so rude we went across the road to The Borough instead.
