Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Around seven years ago, Red Onion's celebrity chef-patron, John Quigley, gave up his many roles, including private tour chef to Bryan Adams, Tina Turner et al to settle down and run his own family-oriented restaurant in the Business District of the City Centre. Contemporary yet traditional décor combines in a large neutral dining space with wood tables and a handful of leather booths, with exposed brickwork and a large open fire adding homely comforts. Those wanting a more intimate experience can head to the mezzanine, which allows for an eagle-eye view over the space below. The menu focuses on a combination of typical European and Asian cooking – scallops with chorizo or prawn tempura sit alongside roast chicken, five-spice duck and Moroccan lamb, the later comes blushing pink with a strong garlic hit from home-made hummus, smoky aubergine and a light zingy couscous. If sweet treats are your thing, have a try of the apple and butterscotch crumble – with the balance of tart fruit and the luxury of butterscotch sauce it is delightful served with warm gooey custard.

  • High point: Something for everyone on the menu
  • Low point: Inconsistency in quality of dishes

2. John Quigley Chef/Patron, Red Onion – 17 March 2011, 2:36pmRed OnionReport

Dear James, Many thanks for your comments as all feedback is welcome - good, bad or indifferent. I am dissapointed at your comments as they are in no way representitive of general customer reaction which when taken over a period of 6 years has been and is excellent. It is unfortunate that one isolated bad experience can spoil a potential customers opinion of Red Onion - this seems grossly unfair as we have up to 1000 content and satisfied customers in any given week who do not feel the need to follow up their visit with a review. If you had raised your concerns on the occassion of your visit we would have been delighted to rectify and make good your experience and happily given you "money back".

This is one of the most over-priced and mediocre restaurants I have eaten at in Glasgow.

The service was pretty poor and the staff seemed stressed out and unhappy. The food arrived luke warm at best. The menu is very confused and this comes through in the dishes. Nothing stood out and none of it was seasonal in the slightest.

The chef did some sort of walk around at the end of the night chatting to customers. Not sure if this was for his benefit or ours, I wanted to ask for my money back but felt badgered into saying it had all been 'fine'.
