The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops. This review is taken from the 2007 edition.
The Deep Sea, which has been around since 1920, has minimal décor and no seating, and wastes no time with frills or gimmicks. Its location amongst some of the busiest clubs and pubs in Edinburgh still ensures a healthy trade. The dough is made fresh on the premises daily, and this remains one of the few places in town to offer its pizzas deep-fried. Indeed, owner Pasquale Bianchi is happy to batter and fry any of the chocolate bars on offer. The mushy peas would please the fussiest of connoisseurs, and act as a perfect accompaniment to the excellent fish. Vegetarians may find the pickings slim, however. Be prepared to defend your place in the queue once the nearby clubs turf their patrons onto the street.
