Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

In a gloriously airy and open space on the ground floor of the WASPS studio building, in-house artists rub shoulders with workers from local businesses or Royal Infirmary employees over excellent breakfasts, lunches and snacks at this gem of a café. The emphasis is on quality, with lots of organic, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Soups are a high point. Owner/chef Frankie Larkin is committed to creating a different one for each day of the year in 2008: carrot and coriander gains texture from finely shredded carrot, its sweetness cut with a hint of orange, while lentil is creamy, thick and smooth. Sandwich fillings range from marinated roasted vegetables with pesto and mozzarella to poached salmon with dill and cucumber, by way of chilli-hot chicken and peppers. They're all served on a choice of organic, seed-rich granary, earthy spelt, bagel or panini. Freshly-squeezed juices are a house speciality; create your own from options including apple, raspberry, orange, carrot and spinach. Or plump for the weekly special, its nutritional benefits outlined on an easel-mounted blackboard. With characteristic thoughtfulness, Sejuiced also offers a mother and newborn celebration pack containing soup, a sandwich, yogurt with seeds and fruit, juice and a cake, delivered to the nearby Princess Royal Maternity Unit.

  • High point: Great food made with love
  • Low point: Not having anyone to buy a baby celebration pack for

Lovely cheery cafe where the owners are very friendly and welcoming. The food is fresh, very tasty and different from a lot of other places. Plenty of variety with the owners challenging themselves to make 365 new soups- one for every day of the year! My fiance also loves the freshly made juices, where I am in heaven with the cake selection!

I used to only be able to treat myself the odd time when I was off work but now Frank has opened on a Saturday between 10am and 3pm I'll be there nearly every week!

A real must try.
