Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Charming restaurateur Graeme Pacitti personally greets all his customers, emphasising the neighbourhood feel of his establishment. This strong community feel is further reflected in The Restaurant's partnership with the local Bottle Shop, which supplies the wine, and the local sourcing policy (an intro in the menu assures diners that only the freshest ingredients are used and names the farms where Pacitti sources his beef). Meat eaters are in for a treat here. The Restaurant special starter is not to be missed: tasty, fresh, seared north Atlantic king scallops are served on black pudding and croutons. Prime fillet of Scottish beef is meat of amazing quality but the vegetable accompaniment fails to live up to what is described on paper. Indeed, The Restaurant is not the best place for vegetarians: the thought that is invested in the rest of the menu is not extended to vegetarian options, and veggie main courses such as Singapore stir-fried noodles prove disappointing. Desserts, while enjoyable, do not seem to follow the same seasonal policy as the rest of the menu.

  • High point: Cosy neighbourhood restaurant
  • Low point: Weak vegetarian options
