If it’s a hangover breakfast, pre-lecture fuel-up or lunch-hour pitstop that’s required, Black Cherry in the Grassmarket is there to satisfy. A tiny but cheery café serving breakfast rolls, sandwiches, wraps and bagels, coffee and cakes to students, tourists and time-strapped workers alike, it makes the most of a limited menu by offering imaginative, tasty sandwich fillings and making sure the fresh ingredients are exactly that. A selection of gourmet rolls includes a punchy salami with jalapeno peppers, sweet jarlsberg cheese and crisp salad leaves; you’ll also find falafel, tuna and spicy chicken options. This may be just a sandwich joint, but there’s no shying away from flavour. The lunchtime queue at the counter builds up quickly, yet service is still speedy and attentive if you decide to sit at the big window table to linger over your coffee or tea with a generous piece of flapjack, shortbread or a slice of home-made cake.
- High point: Crisp, fresh salad ingredients
- Low point: You’re never far from the kitchen door

Everytime I go here I leave happy! Foods great, staff friendly, always something new to try and possibly one of the most relaxed cafes. The food is always fresh and ingredients are of a higher calibre you expect from a little cafe. I work in an office nearby and dont mind waiting in the lunch queue as its always worth it
