Opened in 2000, Ashoka at the Mill is one of the Harlequin group's most modern additions to its popular Glasgow empire. It's located in a converted farmhouse in the southside area of Darnley, and there's a firm family focus in this cavernous restaurant - not least in the shape of Poppa Dom's Playzone, a huge children's activity area comprising one whole wing. Service is thoroughly attentive from the off. Staff are straight on hand with advice on starters, and their recommendations of sunhari baby corn (fresh mini-corn cobs coated in crunchy bread crumbs and served with tomato salsa) and fish amritsari (essentially fish pakora doused in a cool, mild chilli and mint yoghurt dip) are certainly well-informed. Main courses include a curry connoisseur selection: a range of popular dishes that includes a smooth and creamy, if perhaps slightly too mild chicken ceylonese korma. There's also a choice of tandoori sizzlers, of which the jhinga - a stack of fat, succulent, garlicky king prawns served on a steaming bed of vegetables - is a definite standout. A large function room and daily evening buffet also make Ashoka at the Mill a popular choice for lively parties.
