Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The tapas-style dining branch of the Mother India group can be found in a prime spot facing Kelvingrove Museum. The dark wood interior gives a refined feel to this café, while the menu itself is perfect for a more informal and experimental meal. Three or four dishes – from the 40 or so on offer – between two people is their recommended starting point, allowing diners to sample a wider variety of dishes from the mix of curry house classics and less familiar creations. The lamb karahi is a treat, containing tender morsels of lamb in a rich flavoursome pepper sauce. Vegetarian options are plentiful – the aloo saag dosa’s delicate flavours make it a nice counterpoint to the more heavily spiced dishes. Chicken served in a rich buttery sauce with almonds is another mildly spiced hit, while those looking for more kick can find it with the chilli chicken dosa. Prompt, friendly service and an attractive setting contribute to the enjoyable dining experience. Mother India’s Café doesn’t accept bookings so be prepared to queue at busy times.

  • High point: Delicious lamb karahi
  • Low point: Doesn't accept bookings

Very good. The standard of food is excellent. One of the best restaurants in Glasgow and most evenings around 6.30, there will be a queue outside.
Don't let this put you off, it's worth waiting!

The food is fantastic (like Indian tapas cause you get lots of little portions) but very disappointed that they don't take bookings. Wanted to book for my birthday but will have to go elsewhere now cause I can't risk a big group being turned away. Not v good customer service. Do not get this confused with Mother India- the cafe is much better.

I visited Mother India Cafe yesterday afternoon with my husband and children after some skateboarding in Kelvingrove Park. We found the service good and staff very pleasant. The food was in Tapas style with small portions of each thing, very good for fussy children. The food was excellent. Our only concern was the way it was served, the dishes were all brought to the table at different times. Don't know if that's the way they do it, or if it was because they were busy. Excellent food!!
