Eating & Drinking Guide 2010

The new edition of the List's Eating & Drinking Guide is available in the shops and online with fully updated reviews of over 800 restaurants, cafés and bars.

This review is taken from the current (2010) edition.

A steady stream of business flocks to this neighbourhood restaurant, and passing trade is not the secret. Loyal Morningside residents provide the mainstay for success in an establishment where pristine white linen tablecloths and handsomely uniformed waiters are the norm. Home-made cheese is a recurring theme here, and cubes of pakora-style panir are a fine way of getting things started, the marinated, soft fillings contrasting with the crispy battered casing. An impressively proactive website boasts of a Sunday buffet and contains a 'featured dishes' section, detailing some house specialities and allowing the more indecisive diner to take some advice. One such dish is podina murgh massallam, which has the customary hue and flavours of a tikka massala, but with a zap of fresh mint to differentiate it a little from the nation’s favourite curry. They might not come here from far and wide, but with the locals' spice cravings amply catered for, that won't worry the ownership.

  • High point: Good-value fare, popular with locals
  • Low point: Doesn’t stand out enough to be popular with non-locals

Comments for The Clay Oven (86 Morningside Road, Edinburgh)

1. M – 10 August 2009, 6:35pm(4s)Report

The atmosphere is always warm and the staff consistently friendly and attentive. The menu is large and contains the usual list of dishes you would expect, whilst the food itself is plentiful, well balanced and delivers on taste and quality.

This may not "be the sort of place you cross continents to get to", but it is, in my experience one of the better and more consistent Indian restaurants in Edinburgh. The number of regulars suggest I am not alone in my assessment.

2. Mrs Foodie, Edinburgh – 7 August 2010, 7:26pmReport

Went on a Monday night for sit-in dinner. Was quiet, but steady stream of people coming in and out and delivery orders being taken.

Food tasted freshly made (no leftovers from weekend) and service efficient. Were asked if we wanted the usual pops and dips before looking at menu - nice to view menu eating the pops and drinking to whet the taste buds.

Will def go again!
