The brazen blue shop front of Morton's Coffee House attracts students as they meander down from the university looking for a place to hang out. The cerulean theme continues inside, with co-ordinating armchairs, bar stools and tables clustered around a large counter. Big windows on all sides offer people-watchers a view of Byres Road, while others choose to surf the web on one of the internet terminals. The ambience is set by girly chats over lunch and adults placating their small children with morsels of cake. The menu seems familiar with soup, toasties, panini and sandwiches, but fillings such as roasted vegetables and mozzarella or pastrami and emmental bring something a bit different. Any main course simplicity contrasts with the abundance of fancy tray-bakes, scones, muffins, cakes and confectionary; the banoffee cheesecake is so good it runs out fast, and the gypsy cream cookies will transport you back to some sort of childhood. Smooth Danesi coffee becomes frothy cappuccini and there are plenty of herbal teas for those averse to caffeine. Despite the tired interior, this place's combination of excellent value food, an internet and wi-fi service and friendly staff is a winning formula.
