Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

When you’ve been in business since 1928, you must build up a lot of regulars – perhaps that’s why this Dennistoun institution has such a large menu, because they can’t risk disappointment by dropping any old favourites. It’s an odd mix of traditional Italian restaurant, with many more native favourites – mince ’n’ tatties, chips and curry sauce, and full-fried breakfasts – and the attached chippy giving it a cheap ’n’ cheerful feel. And, with this area newly gentrified, there’s also a deli selling home-made items, such as bread, ice-cream and sandwiches. The décor is nicely old-fashioned, emphasising their heritage – the restaurant has been in the same family throughout. A starter of fishcakes in a light ragu has a bland texture but is tasty, while a risotto with lumps of Italian sausage separates nicely but is heavy with the tomato sauce. Grilled sirloin oozes flavour – they boast their beef is all aged for 28 days – and comes with plenty of sides, while fussy people can dictate their personal pizza toppings. Fairly busy most nights, Coia's looks set to be around for another generation.

  • High point: Their ice-cream is justly famous
  • Low point: Chippy chips look better in a bag than on a plate

Used coias for years..... Til now! Wont go into too much detail, but when i phoned to complain about a take away meal i had ordered i was pretty mich dissmissed by the owner! Its not a cheap place to eat and i dont mind paying for good food, but kinda get the impression that once they get your money, they dont care!! Big thumbs down coias. Wont b back.

I have been going to Coia's for 3 years now. I wouldn't have ventured to Duke Street for something to eat but was conducting some business in the area and spotted the place and so decided to go to lunch with my wife there. We have been frequent visitors since.

Yesterday (Sunday) we went for lunch there and it was just better than ever. The food and service was always good but on Sunday it just seemed to be up a few notches.

Terrific. My compliments.

BEEN GOING TO COIAS FOR A WHILE NOW BECAUSE THE FOOD IS GREAT BUT AS FROM THURSDAY OF LAST WEEK WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK,NOT BECAUSE OF THE FOOD BUT BY THE LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE.THERE WAS A NEW WAITER WHO,BY ACCIDENT TIPPED A GLASS OF WINE OVER MY DAUGHTER,IT WAS AN ACCIDENT BUT OF THE FOUR WAITERS,ONE OF WHICH WAS THE OWNER NOT ONE APOLOGISED FOR THE INCIDENT.THEY JUST ASKED US TO MOVE TO ANOTHER TABLE,I HAD TO ASK FOR A CLOTH TO DRY HER.A SIMPLE SORRY WOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH.
