Occupying a prime position at the foot of Byres Road, the Baby Grand West End adds a touch of extra elegance to the scene at Partick Cross. In premises more spacious and swish than the Charing Cross flagship, relaxed and friendly staff mill effortlessly between scattered tables and smooth live piano soundtrack often fills the restaurant with casual jazz. A menu of burgers, pasta dishes and other bistro favourites is supplemented by a chalkboard detailing Mediterranean-inspired seasonal meat and fish dishes. A starter of smoked haddock and roast salmon fish-cake is complemented with a piquant pepper relish, while an artichoke and shallot salad is scattered with sweet, crunchy pine nuts and sun-blush tomatoes. A moist and tender pork loin is lightly charred, served on a generous island of pungent mustard mash surrounded by a sweet red onion jus. Succulent meatballs that come proudly atop a nest of fresh linguine might benefit from a touch more garlic, but the sauce has a delightful, tangy fruitiness. Among desserts, a gooey brownie is a chocolate lover's delight.
