Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

The lack of an alcohol licence in this intimate restaurant just off Lothian Road means the focus is on the quality of the cooking and the pleasant, laid-back ambience. Take a look over the extensive menu while sipping a smooth, tasty mango lassi or one of the freshly made fruit juices. Waiting staff are incredibly patient and will happily talk customers through some of the less familiar dishes. Starters run the gamut of British curry house fare, from crispy mixed vegetable pakoras to angel-light puris and alo chatt – chunks of potato served with a hot and sour sauce. The tandoori selection includes skewers of juicy charcoal-grilled king prawns marinated in a tangy mix of lemon and natural yoghurt. Meanwhile fans of mild, smooth curries can indulge in a rich and succulent butter chicken with almonds, yoghurt and ground herbs. Prices are extremely reasonable and there’s a good selection of enticing set menus for individuals and couples.

  • High point: Great food in a calm, convivial atmosphere
  • Low point: Very little dessert choice

Not able to comment on the quality of the food due to the poor customer service and online ordering system for home delivery.

On the back of a good review in The List, I placed an order online at 8pm last night (saturday) and received an email confirmation shortly afterwards confirming our order and that our food would be delivered within 45 minutes to 1 hour. At twenty past nine I phoned the restaurant to find out when they expected to deliver our order.

I was told that they had received my order but "could not see the details of my order" and that it had therefore not been processed. They could not explain why they had not phoned me to check my order, or why I had received an order confirmation if they had not in fact received the order or were unable to process it. They asked if I wanted to place a new order and when I said I no longer wished to place an order they then hung up on me. No apology was offered.

I am not sure whether there is a problem with their online ordering system (in which case, why was it not taken off line?) or they were simply very busy (it was Calcutta Cup night) and couldn't be bothered with home delivery orders.

Either way, the customer service was extremely poor and does not encourage me to visit the restaurant or place an order for delivery.

This is a fairly small restaurant but thaks to this the owner has a chance to talk to everyone. The staff are very grand and have created a very friendly atmosphere. I have been going there for 5 years now, bringing different friends and all of them love it. The food is always great, I can honestly say that I have never tasted a better Indian dish. The prices are very inviting too :) Definately worth a try!

Went here for a curry last week as though we'd try somewhere new for a change. However, I don't think I'll be returning, as the service was as poor as I've experienced. We were sat at our table from 6.55 and didn't receive our starters until 7.55, despite telling the waiters that one of our party was in a hurry. The main courses took another half hour to come and we had to ask for the bill 3 times before we were finally presented with it.

I could understand the wait if this was haute cuisine but the food was merely passable when it arrived.

Give it a miss, there's plenty better Indian restaurants in Edinburgh.

We've been going here regularly for the last 3 years, and keep going back. The food is amazing and reasonably priced. It has a modern but cosy atmosphere and good service. They always seem to find us a table regardless how busy it is (and it is often busy!). The Chicken Tikka Khumbi Dupiaza is highly recommended.
