Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 is now in the shops.

This review is from the 2007 edition.

Football looms large in this busy city centre café-bar by Queen Street station, from the giant screen in the pub to numerous smaller versions above the comfortable dining booths in the adjoining restaurant wing. There's even another (rain-proof) model in the large outdoor heated smoking area. A jolly array of international flags and numerous pictures of various continental destinations confirms the impression that televised football from across the globe is the main customer draw here, alongside drinks promotions (but no food deals). This international theme is reflected in the menu, which, beside the usual pub grub favourites, has a selection of tapas, Italian dishes, and even some signature Scottish choices. One such starter, Stornoway black pudding in a rather incongruous salad, is disappointingly lacking in flavour. Similarly, a main of chicken stroganoff comes in a bland, creamy sauce with a distinct odour of flour. But a dish of Neapolitan chicken fares better, with a large breast of meat - firm, but not fibrous or overdone - in a sauce of Mediterranean herbs and peppers, served with crunchy green salad. The slightly elevated prices for such straightforward food possibly reflect the key location of the premises, with its 'executive box' view of George Square.
