Assiduous appetite building is essential to maximise the experience of this wonderful Forth-side pub. Location alone wins you over in a pub teetering above the waves with seals and birds below and boats drifting off into sunsets. Choose from the conservatory (a must for Gran's birthday), the older bar or a salt-sprayed table outside. All-comers - kids included - are welcomed with warmth and the indulgent staff never let up, pointing out the local wildlife, honestly appraising your chosen dish, and checking all is OK while reading the paper on their break. And, yes, it certainly is OK and there is no resting on location laurels here. Punchy home-made tartare sauce elevates a brimming bowl of whitebait, served with a salad that has actually had some effort put into it. The spanking fresh fish-cakes are (for once) full of fish. After these ship-sized starters, find space somewhere for a seasonal special such as lamb stew, a hefty piece of haddock in genuinely golden batter (more tartare - bring it on!) or a fabulous fish-heavy chunky chowder. Room for more? Probably not, but muster one last effort for pudding, such as good old chocolate fudge cake or the cracking chef's crumble.
