Leith's Waterfront developments are bringing new residents and business to institutions such as the bustling Old Chain Pier, a historic location perched just above the Forth. There are outdoor tables in the summer, and the vast expanse of glass affords great views across to Fife during the day. The menu offers plenty of hearty sustenance, mainly pub grub classics across all three courses, but with more adventurous specials such as beef stir-fry also vying for your attention. Portions are huge: the fish-cake starter must contain an entire shoal, while all that's missing from the gigantic steak pie is a pair of horns. Unfortunately, the fish-cakes max out on the potato, which diminishes the impact of the fish, while the accompaniments have a canteen flavour to them; on this visit the carrots had possibly been simmering in a busy kitchen for too long, and by the time they arrived at the table they had lost their flavour. The service is prompt, attentive, friendly and courteous, of an exemplary standard that hasn't quite translated into similarly excellent food.
- High point: Cheerful and helpful attitude
- Low point: The heat in the kitchen doesn't extend to the dining room
