Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

A sleek, stylish and airy character-setter for its corner of the Merchant City, the Italian Kitchen has a striking atmosphere of buzz and bustle at lunchtime, with relaxed business people competing with smatterings of recharging shoppers to be heard above knives scraping and glasses clinking. Seafood dishes change daily, but true carnivores' choices of indulgent steak options are perennial, alongside substantial pasta, pizza and risotto selections. King prawns – well cooked if somewhat lacking in flavour – are helpfully augmented by a feisty sweet chilli sauce that makes for a distinctive aftertaste. Earthy, smoky wild mushrooms and fresh tendrils of spinach are baked au gratin in a creamy Mornay sauce, the crêpe's crust cracking invitingly. The chicken supreme, draped with Parma ham, oozes gooey buffalo mozzarella into a syrupy scarlet Marsala wine sauce. The modern interior of red, cream and chrome nevertheless retains a traditional sense of hospitality, reinforced by evocative black and white photographs and chatty, fast-on-their-feet staff sweeping between tables.

  • High point: Perfectly pitched ambience
  • Low point: Sparse sausage on the sausage pizza
