Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Some restaurants promise more than they deliver. Wildfire does it the other way round. The stone frontage with its 'Scottish Steak and Seafood Bistro' signage disappears into the old-style pubs and bars which still define Rose Street, but step through the door and you’ll find a tidy and appealing little space decked out with blue-painted panelling and a log-burning stove. You might choose a bowl of mussels, steak and chips, and ice-cream to follow. Nothing startling here, you might think. But the mussels are the freshest and best the west coast can send, and allowed to do their splendidly briny thing by a simple cream and white wine broth. Your prime sirloin, ribeye or fillet comes seared just as you’ve asked, and reminds you why Scottish Aberdeen Angus is the benchmark for beef the world over. The side salad is fresh and the mound of shoe-string fries crisp and crackling hot. The three creamy scoops of ice-cream are laced with honey, whisky and oatmeal, with berries and shortbread on the side. Decent wines are fairly priced, and staff quick on their feet and genial. Wildfire definitely delivers.

  • High point: West coast seafood, top-notch beef, artisan Scottish cheeses – simple but good
  • Low point: Like No. 12 Grimmauld Place, easy to overlook unless you're in the know

Very good steak, surf and turf - the best in Edinburgh
Definitely will be back, only if you could expand the restaurant!!

We visited last Saturday night and thought it was excellent. Steaks were amazing. I had the soup as a starter (butternut squash and parmesan) which was very tasty, my partner had prawns which were big and juicy! Service was also very, very good without being intrusive at all. Liked it inside, small and cosy. Will definitely be going back.

I would heartily recommend this restaurant. I have visited several times over the years and they've always been great.

The first time I visited was with a work group in 2005. I told them that I had a vegetarian in the group and they made sure that there were extra vegetarian options on the menu that night. I also told them that I had a blind colleague with a guide dog and they weren't the least bit phased. They even provided a bowl of water for the dog on the night!

The second time I visited in 2006, I had another group of people. This time there was one Coeliac (gluten-free), one with a nut allergy, and a couple of vegetarians. The Wildfire staff coped with the special diets brilliantly and it was such a friendly atmosphere that we were there until closing time!

I've been a couple of times since and have always been happy with the service and the food.

Didn't even know that this place existed until we visited for lunch yesterday. My partner and I went for the set lunch menu (£13.95 for 3 courses) and both of us were delighted by what we had. Everything about the meal, restaurant and staff were fantastic and I am only disappointed that I haven't discovered this place sooner!

I would definitely recommend the mussels, which came in a lovely buttery garlic sauce with plenty of chunky bread to dip in. My main of duck was also delicious, I am not keen on meat on the bone but didn't even give it a thought as I was enjoying it so much.

After two courses I was stuffed, but having had enjoyed the meal so much I decided to have the cheesecake and was glad that I did. It was creamy and the raspberry coulis was sharp and complemented the cheesecake very well!

I would highly recommend this place to anyone and am looking forward to going back there myself shortly!

Our office went here to have a long lunch meal (8), its small, intimate but the staff are friendly, down to earth and aim to please . There areonly about 8 tables of different sizes but we stayed about 5 hrs, until we honourable left as they were setting up for dinner customers, (they could have sold the table again!! but didn't)
The steaks were some of the best i've had - truly cooked to perfection, the side orders an average size, the wine was great, the surroundings comfy and socialble and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
