Dragon Way knows how to make a first impression. Crammed with ornate artefacts imported from China, the larger Southside restaurant includes a huge water feature and gold decorations galore, its sumptuous surroundings bordering on 'ghetto chic'. It's a nice idea, but one slightly undermined by tables packed in way too close for comfort, even when the restaurant is half empty. Still, the service is spot-on and the food creatively presented, with a flower on each plate adding a special touch. The diverse menu lists a range of spicy Szechuan and milder Cantonese dishes alongside a smattering of curries to cater for Western tastes. The starters are a little hit and miss: the crispy shredded chicken, one of the chef's recommendations, is uninspiring, even with the aid of a rich plum sauce plopped on the side; while the flavoursome hot and sour soup has a delicious kick. The main courses tell a similar story - while the cheung bau duck isn't particularly exciting, the fried bean curd with chilli and salt has more depth. Owner Michael Yip also runs a cosy franchise with the same menu in Portobello. Although less dramatically decorated than its Newington counterpart, it is tastefully furnished and has an equally warm ambience. While the takeaway area right next to the dining room can be slightly distracting, it's a minor irritation, easily overlooked.
