The quaint connotations of this restaurant's name might seem misleading as you trek around the rather grimy streets of Tradeston in search of it. Rest assured: once you've found your way through the small door and up the narrow staircase - located between its takeaway/café and the Lord Nelson pub - you'll enter a cosy world. Adorned with elaborately designed dark wooden chairs, pine flooring and sheets of colourful fabric draped from the ceiling, the Village Curry House (our Budget Restaurant of the Year in 2006) has become recognised as a small wonder of inexpensive eating. The fare is straightforward. The veggie platter starter for two carries no surprises, offering a range of crispy pakoras, potato fritters and salad. It's all immaculately prepared, however, and exceptionally tasty, as are main courses, such as a speciality ginger lime chicken, soaked in a coconut-laced sauce and sprinkled with thick shavings of onion. For reasons of devotion, no alcohol is sold or tolerated on the premises, which is fair enough (although the relentless, blaring sub-continental pop music from the plasma screen might eventually drive one to drink).
