Dragon-I has blazed a trail for contemporary Chinese food in Glasgow for eight years. Although others have overtaken them, serving up a more authentic cooking or offering brighter, more modern surroundings, Dragon-I still delivers an international take on Chinese food that has something for pretty much any diner. For instance the Stornoway black pudding crispy pancake rolls nod towards a Scottish menu while a thick, peanutty curry introduces Malaysian flavours. Little of it seems to be truly grounded in any particular region – a lychee crème brulee pudding doesn’t seem to be much more than crème brulee with some lychees on the side – but what’s not to like in that? And some dishes are so successful that it scarcely seems important that they cannot be clearly labelled as this or that – the sea bass, for instance, with a spicy chilli crust and stir-fried veg is a real winner. Full prices are quite high but set meals offer good value in chic surroundings – the Theatre Royal is right opposite, and the Pavillion is just two minutes’ away.
- High point: Sea bass with a chilli crust
- Low point: Menu stays the same all year
