Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2011/12 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.

Owner and chief chef Gary Bayless brings a wealth of experience from the kitchens of top French restaurants to this small but feisty enterprise that specialises in creative fusions and quality sourcing. A small frontage leads to a slightly larger room with plain wooden tables along both long walls and a simple colour scheme rounding off the informal vibe. Menus are created daily with the freshest seasonal ingredients taking the lead. A starter of pressed rabbit and Chablis terrine is moist and zingy with its poaching wine bringing out the earthy meat, while a flaked smoked salmon dish is light and bright with lively hints of lime and dill. From the mains, a muscular portion of twice-cooked pork belly is tender and meaty, served in a rich Japanese broth with sparkling red peppers on a braised Pak Choi, while a pan-seared chicken is flawlessly supported by tagliatelle with smoked garlic cream sauce – entertaining on every mouthful. Hearty portions are the order of the day here, with slick, upbeat service and the lively chatter of contented customers creating the main mood music.

  • High point: Creative cooking and hearty portions
  • Low point: Unnecessary veg with every meal – whether it suits or not

Best meal I've had in Glasgow in a long time. We eat out a lot and this was quite simply the best cooking and service by a mile. Would highly reccommend to anyone whatever their taste.

Great atmosphere and decor, it's a small place but you don't feel crammed in at all.

Talk about exceeding our expectations! We had valentine,s dinner here last night and it was the most amazing food and experience we have had in a restaurant. We booked after reading different review,s and can only imagine that the review by the emmiline9 was either an off night or another restaurant they were in!! The quality of the food was outstanding and the menu itself was by far the best choices we have had in a long time as there was plenty to choose from and for a night like valentine,s it was a dream price of only £29.95 for 3 courses of top class food and all cooked perfectly and a bottle of wine thrown in.
The restaurant was full with a great vibe and to top it off we had the best service we have ever had in any restaurant anywhere( and on behalf of my girlfriend from 2 hot waiters)
We were made more than welcome and will pass on this experience to our friends as the food was second to none and exceptional value for money.
As we were leaving we received a copy of their ala carte menu and were invited back to see them soon which we thought was a nice touch to end our evening, again it looks amazing choice and which will take us back to eat there again without a doubt.
FANTASTIC!

Attracted by the name and the review,s we ate here at the weekend and what a wonderful evening it was. We were welcomed by friendly waiters who took our jackets and showed us to our table. We had plenty to choose from on the menu. We had pate wrapped in parma ham with a beautiful chutney, a chick pea chilli and feta salad, our mains were venison and a truffle artichoke with red cabbage and a pumpkin courgette and chickpea curry with fritters which was so tasty.
Sadly we had no room for desserts as the portions were on the large side.
The evening had a good vibe to it and the 2 rather FIT waiters gave great service working well together fronting a busy restaurant as its not the biggest of places.
The food was delicious and value for money, the waiter showed us their pre theatre menu for a later date which had less of a choice but also looked amazing value. We had the best night in a long time as we were not rushed in anyway. We were impressed by all at fanny trollopes as it was delicious in all area,s and will be back for sure.

We ate here AT LAST! Called for a table for 2 only to be told that they were fully booked but if they got a cancelation they would call us back, and to their word they did and to our delight we finally had dinner at fanny trollopes. The food was delicious and the service was top notch!
Starters of king prawns and smoked salmon followed by 2 massive mains, the biggest lamb shank ever with butter beans and a delicious jus and an 8oz rib eye steak with my favourite dauphine potatoes and wild mushrooms.
We shared a chocolate and raspberry cheesecake and a cheeseboard polished off with coffee and liqueurs. There was so much to choose from on the menu and we overheard the manager telling the table beside us that if she didn,t like the veggie option on the menu that the chefs can always have 2 or 3 choices on the night as it wasn,t a problem for them.
Our night was topped off with the manager taking time to introduce himself as it was our first visit which we thought was a nice gesture.
We tried to book in for valentine.s day but unsurprisingly they were fully booked.
Our experience at fanny trollopes was wonderful from the food to the atmosphere and the best of service with friendly staff.
The manager was charming and attentive and had a great personality as on our way out he thanked us and invited us back soon as he handed me a business card and said " put our number in your phone under fanny" which made us laugh out loud!
When we try a new restaurant we look for positives and negatives and i can honestly say that this restaurant was faultless for us.
Highly recommend!

We booked into fanny trollopes after reading the review,s and it did not disappoint, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. We were well looked after by 2 of the fittest waiters we have ever seen in any restaurant!( thank you to Harry and Matt for their hospitality) There was so much to choose from on the menu!
We had starters of shredded duck salad with chilli and ginger sauce( delicious), tomato and red pepper soup, smoked ham hough terrine, followed by roasted quail with smoked bacon cabbage, wild boar with colcannon potato and black pudding and the fish dish was tremendous and full of flavour in coley with a beautiful coriander crust stir fry with peppers and pac choi ( compliments to the chef.s all round 10/10)
Our desserts were home made rice pudding with mulled pears(yum) and the good old sticky toffee pudding! Our meal was only £25 per head and for 3 courses.
We enjoyed our evening so much that we have rebooked for next month as it was so busy and we wanted to be guaranteed a table.
We loved the buzzing atmosphere, and of course the eye candy as it was so nice to be looked after by handsome waiters without them being intrusive.
The restaurant has a byob at £4 which brought our cost of the evening down too.
This little restaurant is now part of our favorite places to eat as the food and service and value for money was just perfect! A wonderful evening had by all.

contiued ...

The bread that had to be asked for, was like a Tesco baguette, and by now we realised that again we had found ourselves in what can only be called a poor restaurant with no idea on how to provide a complete and satisfying experience.

I am fed up with being served the ordinary and for my wife I despair. Is there no one that can cook good vegetarian food with flavour and imagination. To be fair this is one evening and maybe others have had a better experience, but surely consistency is essential.

We did compalin at the time and they were very polite, but why must we pay money to feel awkward and pay for poor fayre anyway. Unless you are paying top dollar [although 25 pound [no drink] a head is not cheap especially for veg bake that must cost at most 2 pounds for ingredients with clearly little cooking skill required] it appears anything will do and the public are no wiser about what constitutes good food.

Do not go to FTs find somewhere better and then let me know!

Again we have been disappointed by careless and uninspiring food. We do not get much chance to go out - three kids and expense - so when we do we want it to be special and to provide us with something to remember. A couple of years ago we went to a now defunct resturant called 'Blas' - a 'bistro' that boasted of its local produce and trotted out the now familiar litany of empty phrases and cliche. The meal was utterly awful and from then until Friday [19/11]we had chosen the well known - Italian & Indian.

We researched what people had posted and it seemed that we would be save in this well thought of restaurant.

The room itself is less than inspiring, but this is not necessarily problematic. Your fellow diners are rather close and it seemed more like a posh cafe, rather than a restaurant. The staff were friendly, but surely this is a given in the new food conscious Scotland. The menu looked promising - not over populated with meaningless options although some of the language is ridiculous - although not just a Fanny Trollopes' problem to be fair.

My starter was fine and the seafood sauce was rich and full of flavour & the lobster ravioli was sweet even if the pasta was a little over-cooked. My main was distinctly average. A chicken breast with chicken livers and a rich sauce - all of which were cooked well enough, but lurking beneath the chicken was what some interested party had chosen to call risotto. The rice was dry and had none of the rich creaminess you would expect. It provided a rather unpleasent texture and was distinctly flavour free.

I would have been satisfied if not overwhelmed by my food - and woul not be writing this post - if it had not been for the horror show that was my wife's food.

She is vegetarian and when we look at menus we do look to see if the restaurant is thinking imaginatively, beyond the tart with goats cheese or some puff pastry affair. FT's did seem to offer something, but we had been fooled. The quiche, tart, flan - it was not really clear - was stone cold limiting the taste of something already lacking flavour; it was also drowned in a garden of rocket and unceremoniously dumped on top.

This however was nothing compared to what was passed off as a main course. What was served up was a vegetable bake. It looked like it was straight out of 'Harvester' kitchen and I have a suspicion that it had been re-heated as they had already got our order wrong. The taste was as you would expect - blandness personifed. It was accopmanied by a toxic pesto that was inedible and again more rocket than is polite [with only one veg. option for the starter and main course to cover both with rocket is very lazy and shows a complte lack of care or thought for the dining experience]. To be continued...

We went to Fanny Trollopes and had a fantastic meal which was very reasonably priced. The BYOB policy is excellent and helps to make this place very affordable. The restaurant is very small which adds to its character and atmosphere. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only drawback I found that there were six in our party and the table we were given was really not big enough. It was only a minor point though, and didn't spoil what was a really good meal.

2. LilyP, Glasgow – 2 August 2009, 4:59pm5 starsFanny TrollopesReport

The area around Finneston is pretty rich with good quality, well priced places to eat, but for me, Fanny Trollopes tops the lot. It has become my yardstick, and quite a lot of flasher, pricier places suffer by comparison with it. If you are in the market for robust, reliable and comforting fare, this place will provide it and sometimes rather more subtly flavoured surprises too.
It's small, usually very busy and as jules1004 notes, despite the fact that they are not racking up profit on after dinner drinks, you never get the feeling that you are being hurried out to make way for the next cover. Nonetheless, whenever I have wanted a table at short notice, they have always managed find me one. This is the least of the minor miracles regularly performed in this joint.
The service is relaxed, friendly and efficient. The narrow, low-lit space seems to accommodate larger celebratory parties, romantic couples and friendly get-togethers with equal ease. Although the tables are a bit too close together, the acoustics seem to work OK, and I have never found myself struggling to hear those at my table nor overly aware of the conversations of others.
When it comes to the food, I have never been served anything less than tasty, more usually delicious, so although the portions are pretty generous, I rarely resit the urge to order three courses (nor to swap 'tastes' with my companions). While there is always the option of a good cullen skink, the changing selection of starters usually offer the most delicate flavour combinations on the menu. A chicken and pistachio terrine with pear chutney remains one of my nicest food memories. The mains are where the comfort food factor really starts to kick in: pork belly is meltingly soft and crisp in the right places; lamb shank has a serious depth of flavour, and venison and duck arrive in precisely the right shades of pink. Fish eaters are also well served (mmm.. crisp mackerel fillets on ratatouille comes to mind). Vegetarians, through, may only have one main course option, and if you are with vegans then its better to take them over the road to The 78. Whether it's bread and butter pud with homemade custard or a generous multi-berried Eton mess, it is always worth ordering pudding.
Prices have probably crept up a bit recently, to around £15 for most of the meat and fish mains and a bit more for steak, but the price range reflects the quality ingredients, and there are usually a couple of cheaper options too. The BYOB policy helps to keep the final bill down, meaning that this place remains my favourite local bistro: always a treat, but not currently one that must be reserved for special occasions.

Note: this place is CASH ONLY! Cash points on the other side of Argyle St, at the Tescos(left) & Post Office(right).

We went to Fanny Trollopes for our office night out at Christmas and the food and service was fantastic it much exceded our expectations as most places we have been to for Christmas meals are not up to the usual restaurant standard. The BYOB policy was fantastic and the staff made it a night to remember even the chef who was very chatty. The fact that they were in no hurry to move us off the table when obviously they are not making any money from anyone after the meal made such an impression we are all looking forward to a return visit.
