Eating & Drinking Guide 2008

This review appears in the The List's Eating & Drinking Guide 2008 – in the shops now or buy online.

Lunching lawyers, city breakers and local café crawlers succumb to the charms of the only café in town where every day is . . . Sunday. The ultimate escape when the cobbled and tam 'o shanter'd glory of the Royal Mile gets too much, this tasty time-out zone soothes with freshly squeezed orange juice and red berry smoothies, all-day cooked breakfasts, Fair Trade coffee and daily papers while chill-out music plays gently in the background. A healthy choice of fresh salad platters and casual hot food options will fulfill most lunchtime wishes. Butternut and mozzarella lasagne, red pepper and spinach tart with dill, home-made chutney and cheese platter with Gruth Dhu Stone – a Highland cheese covered in oatmeal and pepper – and lamb casserole figure among the daily specials. And for a honey-sweet hit, try tantalising home-made raspberry and almond cake, a healthy apple crumble, or harvest cake of spiced apple and walnuts. Always Sunday is light, airy and with enough elbow room. Its cleansing qualities should blow away the cobwebs in any fuzzy heads, and a short walk to the castle afterwards will leave you smiling.

  • High point: Home-made, hearty and wholesome
  • Low point: Table service would make for total chill-out
