Located just opposite the student union, Assembly is very much pitched at its local clientele, with funky music, leather armchairs and two enormous screens behind the bar showing the sort of things that students like to watch. There is a lot of choice for breakfast, lunch and early dinner, but in this market that isn't a guarantee of a tasty meal, so what's what at Assembly? There is a sharing platter with a meat or vegetarian option, and it's a mixed bag. The garlic bread is not bad, but it's unclear why it is described as pizza bread, while the guacamole accompanying the nachos is very tart and runny. Thankfully, the platter also includes tasty spring rolls, which save the day. The sizzling platter of fajitas with chicken, steak or vegetables is a sizeable portion for the price, but the guacamole accompanies this dish too. The charred chicken fillet burger is billed as popular with the regulars, and, with an extra topping included in the price, is a sensible choice if you know which topping to avoid (and you do now!). The banoffee pie and chocolate brownie are good options from a list of simple desserts.
