Like many places on the Royal Mile, The Tass is often frequented by tourists, but it’s no theme bar. Slightly worn in terms of interior décor, this typical old-style pub is an unpretentious venue for an evening meal, and regular sessions of traditional music make for a lively yet relaxed dining experience. Saturday nights are slightly more rowdy, with folk arriving for the live band later in the night. For a quieter but less atmospheric meal you can choose a table in the seating area towards the back of the main bar. The menu offers some less expected dishes in the realms of pub grub: Scottish-themed combos like grilled pork chop with Stornoway black pudding or peat-smoked haddock and chips are cooked well, and the accompanying vegetables surprisingly tasty. The list of local and Scottish produce will attract those looking to try traditional favourites, from Summer Isles Smokery salmon and Arran oatcakes to Macsween’s haggis. Desserts, like sticky toffee pudding and a range of cheesecakes, are pretty standard, but nevertheless hit the spot.
- High point: Cooking exceeds expectations for a touristy pub
- Low point: Interior décor a bit crusty
