Locals would be mad to trade the fresh, restaurant-quality ready meals at Eat deli (not to mention the cakes, organic goods, wines and overall ethos) for anything on offer at the new mini-supermarket chain at Clarkston. Anticipating some loss of custom, however, Eat may expand its sit-in space and perhaps even serve meals later in the evenings. As it stands, though, one can't fault a dish such as free-range grilled chicken breast (good, tender sinews) atop a creamy Parmesan sauce with chunky bits of baked onion and fennel. Or, the soufflé lightness of a vegetable frittata with nice hunks of squash and sweet pepper as well as tangy goat's cheese. Coffee is 100% arabica beans from Bei & Nannini, and 2007 should see more gluten-free options added to the already well-stuffed cold counter.
